Finishing the season with a 19-1 record, the varsity boys basketball team dives into districts, and its ultimate goal–state–over the next several weeks.

The first district game against Vallivue took place on Valentine’s Day at Rocky Mountain, where the Lions triumphed 53-42. The Lions now advance to semifinals against Eagle, a team with a 13-8 record, at Rocky Mountain Sat. Feb. 18 at 6 pm.

If Borah wins semifinals, they advance to the district finals Feb. 24 and secure a spot in the 5A state tournament at the Idaho Center March 1-3.

The boys are quite proud of their season. Senior Zach Cada said, “I feel like we’re all brothers and we’re not breaking apart like some teams.” With seven seniors on the roster, the team has built an unbreakable bond, a definite strength.

Senior Cody McKague plans to take state this season, saying, “It’d be nice to win it and go out on a high note.”

Senior Braden Corpus said the key to winning state is to be prepared for each individual team. “I think we’ll do well if we’re not overconfident and we don’t overlook anyone.”

The Lions will have some troubles, however, in their attempts to win the state championship. “Our weakness will be facing teams in state we have never faced before,” said McKague.

Cada added that another weakness is starting with low momentum, “We start off slow, and we don’t have our rhythm.” After the first half, however, the speed picks up as the Lions pull ahead, thus proven by their scores of winning by as much as 18 and 22 points over other teams.

Support for the team also comes from the fans. Cada said, “I hear them say we’re really fun to watch, which is a confidence booster.”

Among the top four teams in the 5A SIC are Mountain View, Centennial, Eagle, and Borah. These teams are expected to be the largest threats during the district and state tournaments. Borah, however, has won against Centennial and Eagle twice during the regular season and once against Mountain View, who won the state championship last year.
